Tooth Extractions in Leesburg, Virginia

Cochran Family Dental performs simple and surgical tooth extractions in Leesburg, VA. Dr. Brian Cochran uses local anesthesia and sedation options to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Most patients recover within a few days.

When a tooth is too damaged by decay, infection, or injury to be saved with a filling, crown, or root canal, extraction may be the best option to protect your overall oral health. At Cochran Family Dental, Dr. Brian Cochran performs both simple and surgical extractions with a focus on patient comfort and safety. With over two decades of experience, our Leesburg dental team makes even the most anxious patients feel at ease.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Extraction is recommended when a tooth cannot be saved through other restorative treatments such as fillings, crowns, or root canal therapy.

Dr. Cochran always prioritizes saving your natural teeth whenever possible. However, extraction may be recommended when a tooth has severe decay that extends below the gum line and cannot be restored, when advanced gum disease has loosened a tooth beyond repair, when a tooth is fractured or broken in a way that prevents restoration, when overcrowding requires removal to support orthodontic treatment, or when an infection has not responded to root canal therapy or antibiotics.

During your exam, Dr. Cochran will explain why extraction is recommended and discuss your replacement options, such as dental implants, bridges, or dentures, so you can make an informed decision.

Simple vs. Surgical Extractions

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible above the gum line. After numbing the area with local anesthesia, Dr. Cochran uses specialized instruments to gently loosen and remove the tooth. This procedure typically takes just a few minutes.

A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth has broken off at the gum line, has not fully erupted, or is otherwise difficult to access. Dr. Cochran will make a small incision in the gum tissue and may remove a small amount of bone surrounding the tooth. Sedation options are available for surgical extractions to keep you relaxed throughout the procedure.

Aftercare and Recovery

Most patients feel well enough to return to normal activities within one to two days. The socket typically heals within one to two weeks.

After your extraction, our team will provide detailed instructions to support healing. You can expect some swelling and mild discomfort for the first few days, which can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication and cold compresses. Eat soft foods, avoid smoking and using straws, and keep the extraction site clean by gently rinsing with warm salt water after 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extractions

Is a tooth extraction painful?

You should not feel pain during the procedure. The extraction area is fully numbed with local anesthesia, and sedation options are available if needed. Some soreness after the procedure is normal and manageable with medication.

Most patients recover within a few days. The socket typically heals within one to two weeks, though complete bone healing can take several months.

Dr. Cochran offers dental implants, bridges, and dentures to replace missing teeth. He will discuss the best option for your situation during your consultation.

Dr. Cochran and his staff are the best! We have been blessed to be cared for by Cochran Family Dental for 8 happy years! They are wonderful to our children and family, help us all feel very comfortable, and make the dental appointments easy! Dr. Cochran and his team has been the first dental practice/provider for many of our children and all of them have enjoyed the special prizes, detal care kits to take home, getting their teeth counted and cleaned, and wearing the fun glasses while in the chair. As a parent, I truly appreciate their kindness and meeting children at their level. It is wonderfully heartwarming and starts off pediatric dental care in a gentle and caring way to prevent fears and encourage positive dental hygiene for life! We are a large family and Bethanne is an amazing scheduling guru and truly helps us with any issues or concerns that we may have with aplomb! She is incredibly helpful, kind, and a delight to work with whenever we are in need of dental care or have question. We really enjoy talking with her whenever we come in for our appointments too! Therese is a gifted dental technician and is just a sweetheart of a person! Our entire family is very well taken care of by her during our dental cleanings and care; she is thorough and gentle. Dr. Cochran is wonderful and kind in his education and care of us as his patients. He does so well making any procedure we may need as simple and comfortable as possible! He is excellent in dealing with children of all ages as well as adults. We couldn't be happier with this wonderful practice and highly recommend them to others! -Amelia

Today was my fourth regular dental checkup / cleaning at the Cochran facility. I was with my prior dental practice in McLean for 20 years before moving to Leesburg. Today's cleaning was the easiest, smoothest and most enjoyable I have ever had - thanks to Ms. Therese. Similarly, my checkups with Dr. Brian continue to be professional, thorough and enjoyable. Friendly and helpful reception, quick and comprehensive analysis of my dental issue. Dr Cochran took time from his vacation to address my dental emergency, and I came away with a complete understanding of what was going on, and a plan to address it. This was my first visit to his office, and I was very impressed.

Cochran dental checkup is always friendly, and on top of things. I've never been left waiting for long, and they make sure I'm comfortable with each step of the cleaning.
Cochran Family Dentistry is a “first-rate”practice! My wife has been a patient here for years, and I am thankful she referred me. I moved to the area in 2021 after previously enjoying regular, free, high-quality dental care in the military my entire adult life. I went to another dental practice in Ashburn 14 months ago for xrays and a cleaning, and really did not like the experience one bit. “Pushy” “pricey” and “impersonal” are descriptors I never thought I would use when referring to a dental practice. Having to repeatedly decline the same “optional” treatments during the same visit leaves a bad taste in one’s mouth. Thankfully, Dr. Cochran and his team are the exact opposite of this, and I am so thankful to be a new patient of theirs! If you long for that nostalgic “hometown dentist” feel thst you experienced growing up in the U.S.A., then pick up the phone and book an appointment with Cochran Family Dental! 🇺🇸
